Tesla has stopped taking fresh orders for its Model S and Model X vehicles though its Chinese website, amid intensifying trade war tensions between the world’s leading economies.
Customers from now on won’t be able to place orders for these imported models via Tesla's WeChat mini programme account.
Tesla produces Model 3 and Model Y vehicles at its Shanghai factory, which caters to the Chinese market and European exports, which constitute a huge chunk of its sales.
In 2024, China imported close to 1,553 Model X cars and 311 Model S cars in 2024, said Li Yanwei, an analyst at the China Auto Dealers Association.
